representation in les revenants

how is les revenants atypical of a zombie supernatural horror genres? MES of Camille is highly atypical of the zombie genre, as she lacks typical scary zombie features, she lacks blood open wounds and decaying features. Camille appears hegemonically associative of an upper middle class young woman. she doesn't act like a typical zombie, the mes of her eating a sandwich constructs a highly atypical performance which situates the audience in a very confusing mode of dress claire's reaction is highly atypical, as she doesn't attempt to defend herself or scream. Claire instead plays role of a confident and well prepared middle aged woman. this confusing mode of dress forces the audience to acknowledge that this narrative is highly atypical nys constructtong an atypical zombie narrative, Fabrice Gobert is able to target a niche audience as well as mainstream audience of pre-existing individuals who enjoy the zombie/horror genre. Applying theories of representation to Les Reven...

using French theorists to analyse les revenants

t he opening as a whole suspends us in Medias-res, in the middle of the action, or cold openin Using French theorists to analyse the opening sequence The opening sequence is completely predicated on foreshadowing the events and themes of the TV show. In particular, the arresting image of a butterfly bursting out of a display cabinet encodes the themes of supernatural mystery, and the dead coming back to life, and the fragility of life. Additionally, the MES of the butterfly’s fragile wings functions as a symbolic code for fragility, and overcoming one’s problems, which are core themes of the show  Camille’s depression is both constructed and reinfroced through the anchorage of the close up shot of her staring miserably out of the coach window. This forms a binary opposition between her and the lively students who surround her, and even goes to reinforce the themes of depression, fragility and death  A binary opposition is constructed between a young couple kissing passio...

Les Revenants Analysis

Les Revs is a narrative that is completely based on mysteries, enigmas, and hermeneutic codes. Its narrative is predicated on the fact that not all mysteries will be elaborated to the audience. Potentially this can be very frustrating, and suggests a niche and specialised audience The genre of the first episode is unclear. Comprising a number of genre conventions from a range of completely different sources, the show is very difficult to categorise, which means designating a target audience is also difficult. However, with it’s themes of characters coming back from the dead to ‘terrorise’ a small town, the show is arguably a classic example of a zombie narrative, albeit a highly unconventional one A highly confusing narrative, completely based on hermeneutic codes is established to the audience. However, in the closing montage, the audience learns a range of facts that helps them to make some conclusions about the narrative.  However, like many TV serials there are a number of herm...

taking audience further, black mirror and the cult of Charlie Brooker

Black Mirror and the 'cult' of Charlie Brooker Understanding Black Mirror in general and San Junipero in particular is not something that exists in isolation. Instead our understanding is based on a range of cultural and referential circumstances. Perhaps the most important frame of reference to understanding the TV show is an awareness of Charlie Brooker, the man who created the show, and who wrote the episode we studied. Charlie Brooker is a TV presenter, writer, media personality and social commentator (!) who gained notoriety through initially writing reviews and comic strips for videogame magazines. His big break was writing the TV column in the Guardian newspaper, which presented an often hateful and irreverent (as well as extremely funny) look at the media. Brooker's popularity extended beyond the remit of the column, and ultimately he was able to present a show, Screenwipe, on BBC4, and eventually make TV shows such as  Nathan Barley  and  Dead Set  for Chann...
